Ramadoss writes to Sonia

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has appealed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to direct the Union government to intervene immediately and arrange for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

In a letter to Ms. Gandhi, the PMK leader wanted her to advise the Central government to arrange for negotiations between Sri Lankan government and Tamils.

He expressed the hope that she would treat the matter with “utmost humanism and sympathy.” He also reminded her that the communication was in pursuance of his previous letter to her on January 1.

He said the people of the State had approached the Central government for ensuring the safety of Tamils in the island-nation, but nothing had happened. “However, Sri Lanka and Indian Tamils have full faith in you as their saviour.”

He recalled the assurance made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to an all-party delegation led by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in December that he would depute External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Sri Lanka to initiate the peace process. Noting that Mr.Mukherjee had not visited Sri Lanka, Dr. Ramadoss said the “total voice” of the people of the State had been “disregarded.”

Expresses concern

The PMK leader expressed concern over the possibility of more Tamils getting killed in the Sri Lankan army offensive.
