Woman sets ablaze baby, survives suicide bid Crime Notes

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A woman poured kerosene on her four-month-old son and set him ablaze after which she attempted a fiery suicide in L.N. Colony near Yeshwanthpur on Tuesday night. The boy died and Padma (23), is battling for her life in Victoria Hospital. Padma, a native of Yediyur, had married vegetable vendor Kempaiah of Tumkur two years ago. They had rented a house in L.N. Colony and there was trouble because of the husband’s alcoholism and domestic violence, the Yeshwanthpur police said.

The HSR Layout police on Tuesday rescued a 21-year-old garment factory employee who was allegedly kidnapped by four men. The victim, Badal Malika, is a native of Nadia in West Bengal. He was residing with his relatives in Bellandur near HSR Layout. The police arrested N. Naveen Kumar, a resident of Arolli near Yelahanka, C. Sundaresh of Chikmagalur and Kishore, a native of Kolkata, all aged between 19 and 21.

Naveen Kumar claimed that he was a first year journalism student. The other two are school dropouts. The fourth accused, Chandra (20) of Arolli is absconding.

Badal had relocated to the city about two months ago and was staying with his relative Shabbir. Shabbir had taken money from his friend Thalib, but failed to repay it, over which the two had a fight. “A fortnight back Thalib hatched a plan to kidnap Shabbir. However, the four failed in the attempt and on January 5, they kidnapped Badal,” said police inspector Rajesh Kumar. The accused made several calls to Shabbir and demanded a ransom of Rs. 1 lakh. The police raided a shed at Nagenahalli near Yelahanka on Tuesday and rescued Badal. The police are looking for Thalib.
