South, South-West Delhi to get less water for two months

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Thousands of residents of South Delhi and South-West Delhi will have to subsist on reduced supply of water for the next two months beginning this Friday.

The Delhi Jal Board is all set to begin work for replacing the Old Jal Vihar filtered water transmission mains, which will lead to the water supply being affected in large parts of the Capital.

The pipeline that passes under the Nizamuddin bridge on NH-24 across the Yamuna will remain closed for 60 days. “The closure will result in reduction of water availability to the extent of 20 per cent. Therefore, water supply will be available at reduced pressure and quantity in the entire South District and parts of South-West District,” said a Jal Board official.

Citing reasons for the closure, the official said: “The mains is about 40-year-old and needs replacement. Last year we had several unexpected breaches in the mains and to ensure that such incidents do not recur, we are replacing it.” The official said the Jal Board cannot lay new mains parallel to the current one for lack of space. “There is no space to lay new mains along the existing one. Also, it is difficult and time consuming.”

The Board said it was hopeful of meeting the water demands in the affected areas. “There are other mains that will supply water to the underground reservoirs from where we will use water for supply to these areas. We do not expect any major water problem to occur since the demand in winter falls by about 10-15 per cent. The decision was taken last year itself, but we were waiting to do it in winter, when the demand is not as high as the summer.” The areas that will affected are Okhla, Maharani Bagh, Ashram, Jangpura, Sarai Kale Khan, Sarita Vihar, Badarpur, Greater Kailash-I & II, Lajpat Nagar, Green Park, Haus Khas, Safdarjung Enclave, Dakshinpuri, Madangir, Chirag Delhi, Defence Colony, Vasant Vihar, Munirka Vasant Kunj, Kalkaji Extension, Giri Nagar, Alaknanda, Okhla Industrial area, Mehrauli, Saket, Pushp Vihar, Malviya Nagar, Sheikh Sarai and adjoining colonies.
