Chess
Prameya and Khushi. NAGPUR: Prameya Garge of Maharashtra and Khushi Dharewa of Bengal won the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the National under-7 chess championship that concluded here on Wednesday. Final day saw high drama as three boys hit the tape on nine points after the 11th and final round. Top seed Mitrabha Guha of Kolkata who won his opponent’s queen was seen as the likely clear winner at one stage. He had a queen and bishop against his opponent’s lone bishop. In excitement of winning the first national title, he touched his queen when his opponent had checked him with his bishop. Mitrabha had to cover the check with his queen and lose it and draw the game. Mitrabha’s lack of concentration cost him the title. Prameya Garge of Akola who had only drawn Rakesh Jena of Orissa won the boys’ title on nine points with a higher progressive score. Sankalp Singh of Orissa finished third also on the same nine points. Khushi Dharewa of Kolkata won the final round to take the girls’ title with a clear 9.5/11 score. Trained by former National ‘A’ player Shyamal Dutta, Khushi had won the Bengal State under-7 and now the National under-7 on first attempts. Nithya of Hyderabad and Arpita Mukherjee of Bengal scored final round wins to take the second and third places on nine points each. Important results (final round): Boys: Mitrabha Guha drew with J. Ashwin, Rakesh Jena drew with Prameya Garge, Sankalp Singh bt Ayush Pattnaik, Anand Nadar bt V.S. Rathnavel, P.R. Hirthickkesh bt Shet Prajwal. Girls: Tarini Goyal lost to Khushi Dharewa, Arpita Mukherjee bt Bansi Prathima, Anika Gupta lost to P. Nithya.
