The accused used motorcycles to snatch gold chains from women walking in remote areas

CHENNAI: Four persons, including two school students, were arrested on charges of committing chain-snatching offences at Tondiarpet on Wednesday.

Following frequent chain-snatching incidents in the Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Kasimedu areas, Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan formed a special team to investigate the complaints.

It intercepted three boys who were seen teasing women walking on the road at Tondiarpet.

On interrogation, the minors, including two studying in IX Standard, confessed to having indulged in chain-snatchings under the instigation of Satish Kumar (28) of Kasimedu, police said.

They said Satish Kumar forced them to commit the offences though he gave them some money after every theft. The accused used motorcycles to snatch gold chains from women walking in remote areas.

Police arrested Satish Kumar and recovered 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery and two motorcycles.

He was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody. The minors were sent to a juvenile home.

Our Kancheepuram reporter writes:

The valuables worth about Rs.60,000 were recovered from him. The accused has been sent to a juvenile home.
