“Bring more books on Thevar in English”

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: An appeal was made to the Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Chair in Madurai Kamaraj University to bring out more publications about Thevar in English language for the benefit of younger generation.

B. Devendhira Poopathy, Appellate Deputy Commissioner, Department of Commercial Taxes, Madurai, urged the Chair to translate the ideology of freedom fighter Pasumpon Muthuramlinga Thevar into books in English so that the youth could understand him better.

He was speaking at a special lecture organised by the PMT Chair in MKU on the topic “Role of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar in Freedom Struggle of India” here on Tuesday.

S. Kasimayan, Recovery Officer, Debts Recovery Tribunal, in his inaugural address, said that Thevar was introduced to political life through the bond built with his lawyer S. Srinivasa Iyengar who advised him to participate in the annual conference of the Indian National Congress in then Madras in 1927.

“After his entry into politics, Thevar began to mobilise resistance to the Criminal Tribes Act and he toured villages in affected areas besides leading protest rallies for the rights of individuals registered under the CTA,” he observed.

K. Muthuchelian, Director of PMT Chair, in his welcome address, said that Thevar was a man known for his patriotism, spiritual affection and majestic influence over the people of Tamil Nadu.

K. Karunakara Pandian, Assistant Director, PMT Chair, proposed a vote of thanks.
