Chennai: A poetry contest will be organised for college students as part of the Tamil Sangamam, one of the features of the Chennai Sangamam cultural festival, this year.

The first three entries will be awarded cash prizes of Rs.25,000, Rs.15,000 and Rs.10,000. Ten other entries will receive merit prizes of Rs.1,000 each. Entries will have to be sent to the Tamil Nadu Iyal, Isai, Nadaga Mandram at 31, Ponni Kumaraswamy Raja Salai, Chennai. The last date to send entries is January 13.

A panel of judges, headed by poet Abdul Rahman, will evaluate the entries, and a poetry reading session and prize distribution will be held on January 16. Other events that are part of the Tamil Sangamam include a literary debate, a symposium on ‘forgotten heroes’ and a discussion by writers on ‘books that changed them’. Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi said that the poetry contest for students would encourage them to participate in the Sangamam.

The South India Culinary Association would participate in the food festival organised as part of the Sangamam. Sangam Age cuisine would feature on the menu, Ms. Kanimozhi said. “Dishes made from grains such as ragi, kambu and cholam would also be sold,” she added.

City historian V. Sriram made a presentation on folk arts at the Sangamam on Wednesday. Cultural shows and celebrations were common in the days of old and reviving these arts was a key contribution of Chennai Sangamam, he said. He urged the organisers to hold more events in north Chennai.
