Himachal Chief Minister P.K. Dhumal (left) with Union Minister of State for Commerce and Power Jairam Ramesh in New Delhi on Wednesday. NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday assured Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal that the State’s request for extension of time frame to split the State Electricity Board would be considered in a positive manner keeping in mind the outstanding track record of the hill State in implementation of rural electrification and controlling transmission losses. During discussions with the Chief Minister here, Mr. Ramesh, accompanied by Power Secretary V. S. Sampath, urged the Chief Minister to direct his officials to submit a proposal in this regard in accordance with the Electricity Act and said the State’s request for extension till March 31 would be considered favourably. “If Punjab has been given extension for such an initiative, I see no reason why Himachal should not be given the same treatment,” Mr. Sampath said. Responding to the Chief Minister’s concerns about the failure of the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and NTPC to provide substantial employment to local population, Mr. Ramesh asked the heads of both NTPC and NHPC, who were present at the meeting, to address the concerns and submit a report. “I have asked the NHPC, NTPC and Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam to form a joint venture to start an Engineering Institute in Himachal Pradesh as soon as possible to provide training to the local population in order to absorb them in the projects there ,” he added. Mr. Ramesh informed Mr. Dhumal that Phase III of the 520 MW Parvati Hydro Power Project would be made operational by November 2010 and the second stage of 800 MW by April 2011. In addition, Chamera III of 230 MW would be made operational by August 2010 and the 800 MW Kol Dam project being implemented by NTPC would be completed by 2010.
