DMK denies money distribution charge against Stalin, others

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The DMK on Wednesday denied an allegation that Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin and other leaders distributed money among the electors in Thirumangalam town and other parts of the district soliciting votes.

In his reply to the Election Commission’s notice, the party’s Headquarters Principal Secretary Arcot N.Veeraswami said the party made a “deep probe” into the allegation.

The allegation was false, baseless and sponsored by parties opposed to the DMK. In as much as the Commission had not disclosed the source of information and the manner of such false allegation having been brought to the notice of the Commission, the DMK was of the view that “such an allegation might have been brought in only by the adversaries of DMK party, namely AIADMK party and its allies, to denigrate the image of DMK party and to sabotage the prospects of the party in the ensuing by-election at Thirumangalam.”

The Commission had issued a notice to the DMK to show cause why action should not be taken for violating the Model Code of Conduct and indulging in a corrupt practice within the meaning of Section 123 of the Representation of the People Act.

Mr.Veeraswami said the party further verified with Mr.Stalin and clearly found that he did not distributemoney among the electors. No such attempt was being made in this regard.

The same was the position with regard to other leaders of the party in the district as well as in the constituency. It was very much inappropriate that such false news had been deliberately brought to the knowledge of the Election Commission.

“The Election Commission of India could rest be assured that the DMK party is the foremost one in upholding the majesty of law, the norms of democracy and DMK party is the first party to adhere to the Rule of law, election norms and the Code of Conduct etc.”

The Election Commission on its own had not illustrated any specific incident in any particular manner, with respect to any particular voter, in any particular village or area by further pinpointing the place and time, the reply said.
