Belgaum Zilla Panchayat members at a meeting of the panchayat in Belgaum on Wednesday. Belgaum: Members cutting across party lines in the Belgaum Zilla Panchayat on Wednesday sought an explanation from panchayat president Nazir Ahmed Nadaf for the delay in clearing Rs. 24 lakh due to a contractor though he had completed the work on a building a year ago. Mr. Nadaf was presiding over a meeting of the zilla panchayat. The Government had initially released a grant of Rs. 3.04 crore to construct a building for the zilla panchayat. The foundation for the building was laid on July 16, 2006 and it was inaugurated on January 25, 2008. Another Rs.1.24 crore was sanctioned for providing furniture and other interiors of which, Rs. 24 crore was due to the contractor. The members raised the matter soon after adopting a resolution to mourn the death of Shekhar Bane, member representing Morab of Raibag taluk. Later, the members referred to lack of proper drinking water facilities and roads in several villages in the district. They urged the president to instruct the authorities to take up development projects immediately and provide drinking water to the affected people. Mr. Nadaf asked the members to submit a list of problems faced by the people in rural areas so that works could be taken up accordingly. Vice-president of the zilla panchayat Laxmi Talwar, Chief Executive Officer Ekroop Caur and senior officials were present.
