BERHAMPUR: Due to lack of infrastructure the training of a recent batch of newly-appointed warders had to be shifted from the Jail Training School in Berhampur to open-air jail at Khurda. Despite deficiencies, the jail training school was the only such institute that was producing warders for the security of jails in Orissa. The last batch of warders, who completed their training in the institute passed out on July 31, last year. The institute was found to be not in a position to train the next batch of newly selected warders, who were 344 in number. It did not have accommodation and training facility or accommodation for such a large number of trainees. According to the principal of the jail training school, Birakishore Das, the Government had to shift the training of this large batch of new warders to the open air jail at Khurda. Passing out paradeBut this shifting of training has led to speculation and gossip regarding possible shifting of this more than four-decades old institute from the city to Bhubaneswar. But Mr Dash allayed these fears. According to him the jail training school would continue to exist in Berhampur although a modern jail academy would come up near Bhubaneswar. The forty-first batch of warders, who completed their training in the institute took part in the passing out parade held in its campus. The Additional Director General (ADG) of Orissa Police and Inspector General (IG) of State prisons, V. Thiagarajan took the salute in the passing out parade of warders. The principal of the institute Sunil Kumar Mohanty elaborated the history and problems of the institute in his address. He urged Mr Thiagarajan to take steps to improvise the training process at this institute. No obstacle courseIt is an irony that this only institute of the State for training of jail officials is yet to have an obstacle course for physical training. So, the cadets undertaking training at this institute do not get regular training of jumping walls, passing through trenches, rope climbing and various other obstacle training like balance bar, beam bar, ditch cross etc. The principal felt that due to lack of training in obstacle course the personnel passing out from this institute at times fail in their physical skills to deal with hardened criminals who were in the jails now. He urged the IG of prisons to instruct the police housing corporation to establish a modern obstacle course in the jail training school premises. The principal also pointed out that they were unable to get good guest faculty due to abysmally low allowance the institution provides. At present the guest faculties are provided only 75 rupees per class. The principal wanted the State Government to increase allowance to at least 200 rupees per class. There was also need of filling up of vacancies of this 24-year-old institute. The old bus and jeep of the institute also needed replacement for better transportation of the students and staff. Mr Thiagarajan said that the jail staff needed advanced training in personal combat and modern weapon training. It may be noted that the jail staff get training with .303 rifles at this training school.
