Charkas go hi-tech

HYDERABAD: Electronic charkas, to weave khadi cloth, are replacing traditional charkas in 33 directly aided khadi institutions across the State in a phased manner. In fact, already the Metpally Khadi Gramodyog Pratishtan (Karimnagar district) has purchased one at a cost of Rs.14,705.

Launched by President Pratibha Patil in November 2007, to mark the golden jubilee of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), the e-charka is not only an energy-conserving implement, but also an energy-producing one.

K. Mohan Rao, KVIC State director, told The Hindu that e-charka, developed in association with Bangalore-based Flexitron, were being introduced in the first phase in Guntur Khadi Gramodyog Sangham, Vavila Khadi Gramodyog Sangham, Gramadana Nirmana Samiti, Nagarkurnool, and Bhagyanagar Khadi Samiti, Saroornagar, on the city’s outskirts.

He said the existing chakras could be converted by affixing retro-fittings at a cost of Rs.2,000.

The models, introduced by KVIC incorporate the Ring Spinning Technology have multiple spindles, ranging from two to 12.Mr. Rao said, each e-charka has a generator, a lighting unit of one watt LED, a transistor normal AM/FM radio and a battery.
