HONOUR FOR SERVICE: Minister of State for Statistics G.K. Vasan and Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi with a winner of the community service award at the convention of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi on Tuesday urged the Indian diaspora to invest in India in the full confidence of making profit.

The Minister, who was participating in the annual conference of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International, reassured overseas Indians that there was nothing to worry about, as the Centre was determined to sustain the economic growth.

Assuring potential investors that the government would take all possible measures to protect the economy and the banking sector, Mr. Ravi urged the diaspora to increasingly engage themselves with India’s growth story. The launch of stimulus packages to bolster the economy in the aftermath of global recession and the easing of regulations provided investors a golden opportunity to make investments. Mr. Ravi also assured the diaspora that the Ministry would continue to respond positively to suggestions made by Indian communities wherever they were in the world. Communities could make suggestions or submit a charter of demands, and the Ministry would implement them to the possible extent. Union Minister for Statistics G.K. Vasan presented the GOPIO Community Service Awards to Baroness Shreela Flather (the U.K.); Albert Ramdin, Suriname Ambassador; Chandru Ghanshandas Advani (Yokohama, Japan); Upendra Chivukala, Deputy Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly; and Logie Naidoo, Deputy Mayor of Durban, South Africa.

M.M. Jacob, former Governor, Inder Singh, International president, GOPIO, Ashook Ramsaran, secretary-general, Thomas Abraham, chairman, and ‘Americai’ V. Narayanan, convention chair, Chennai, spoke.

Corrections and Clarifications

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report "Minister urges overseas Indians to invest in homeland" (January 7, 2009) was "Honour for Service: Minister of State for Statistics G.K. Vasan and Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi with a winner of the community service award at the convention of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin in Chennai on Tuesday". The caption was incomplete. The award winner is Baroness Shreela Flather of the U.K., a British politician and the first Asian woman to receive a life peerage.
