Surrendered naxal arrested in Vyas assassination case

Staff Reporter

Chandraiah said that he was leading a normal life, but the police showed him as absconding

HYDERABAD: Nearly 16 years after the assassination of IPS officer K.S. Vyas and acquittal of three accused persons in the case two months ago, the police have arrested a surrendered naxalite, Chandraiah, from Medak district in the case on Tuesday.

He was produced before the Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate here at the Nampally Criminal Court and remanded in judicial custody till January 21. Police stated in the remand report that Chandraiah, an alleged People’s War Group militant, worked as courier for M. Balakrishna, the sixth accused in the IPS officer’s assassination case. Chandraiah worked with the PWG from 1992 to 1996 and later surrendered before the then Medak district Superintendent of Police, V.K. Singh. A non-bailable warrant was pending against Chandraiah from 1993.

Speaking to media persons while being taken away to the jail, Chandraiah said that he was living normally in Medak after his surrender, but the police showed him as an absconding person all these days. While three persons in the case were set free on November 20, trial of the case continued against the other accused, including the surrendered naxalite, Nayeemuddin.
