Crime incidents have come down

Coimbatore: The number of crime incidents being reported has come down by 14 per cent during 2008 compared to 2007, said K.C. Mahali, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City.

Pending trials

Mr. Mahali told reporters here that 823 crime cases were registered in the city in 2007 and 765 of them were detected. A total of 490 cases ended in conviction while 239 were pending trial.

In 2008, the city registered 711 crime cases. Of which 627 had been detected and 122 ended in conviction while 461 were pending trial.

In 2008, property related theft cases were to the tune of Rs. 2.59 crore of which Rs 1.57 crore had been recovered. The detection rate was 88 per cent while the recovery stood at 76 per cent.

Automobile thefts

Mr. Mahali pointed out that in 2008 the special teams of the Coimbatore City Police arrested 75 people on the charges of automobile thefts and recovered 129 two-wheelers and 17 four-wheelers.

The police arrested 34 people involved in 57 jewellery theft cases, including 43 chain snatching cases, which led to the recovery of 462 sovereigns and 15.5 kg of silver anklets.

The year 2008 witnessed no major law and order problems.

Seven major bandobust exercises and over 14 VVIP visits were completed successfully. As part of preventive measures 82 people were detained under the Goondas Act. Five persons were detained under the National Security Act and five under the Prevention of Black Marketing Act.

As part of the community policing and preventive measures, four more check posts were being reactivated at Sethumavaikkal, Perur Road, Mullai Nagar and Al-Ameen Colony.
