Special Correspondent

Seek uniform toll on transport vehicles throughout country

Seeking action: Lorry owners and drivers staging a demonstration in Shimoga on Tuesday.

SHIMOGA: Movement of lorries in Shimoga district has come to a grinding halt with the Shimoga District Lorry Owners’ Federation joining the all-India lorry owners’ strike in support of their demands.

President of the federation B.A. Talkheen Ahmed told presspersons here on Tuesday that movement of lorries transporting essential commodities would not be affected on account of the strike.

He said that the price of crude oil had gone down from 170 dollars a barrel to 47 dollars a barrel in the international market. Mr. Ahmed demanded that the price of diesel be reduced by Rs. 10 a litre and suggested that there be a uniform toll on transport vehicles throughout the country.

Protection

Mr. Ahmed demanded that prices of tyres, tubes and spare parts of lorries be reduced and protection be given to goods transport vehicle drivers against dacoits. Later, lorry owners and drivers staged a demonstration on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in support of their demands.
