Welder killed, driver hurt as oil tanker bursts

KARUR: A welder was blown up when he was working on an empty petroleum tanker lorry here on Tuesday.

Police said that S. Sasikumar (29) of Pettaivaithalai in Tiruchi district was welding a leakage in a compartment of the tanker at a welding shop here when it suddenly burst.

Sasikumar was thrown 30 metres upwards and landed with a thud on the roof of a nearby automobile workshop.

He died immediately. His body was mangled.

Tanker driver I. Saleem (40) of Vangal near Karur sustained severe injuries and is under treatment at a private hospital here. Deputy Superintendent of Police Aravindh visited the spot and conducted inquiries.

Karur Town police have registered a case and are investigating.
