Top lifters for Railway meet

CHENNAI: Some of the leading names will be seen in action in the 56th all-India Railway weightlifting championship to be held at the Nehru stadium from January 7 to 9.

According to a press note from S. Anantharaman, Secretary, Southern Railway Sports Association and Chief Commercial Manager, the performance in the championship will be the basis for selection of the Indian Railway squad for the national championship scheduled sometime later this month.

The competition will be conducted in eight weight categories and 13 Railway units are taking part in the competition in which Southern Railway is the defending champion.

Some of the leading contenders expected to take part are Vinod Kumar, Anbu Kathiravan, Kalidoss, Veerabhadran, Sudalaimuthu, Elumalai, Prabhu, Karuthupandian, Amarjith Sandhu and Vipin Kumar.

For the first time, there will be competitions for women weightlifters too.
