Value-added services for mobiles in focus

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: An international conference, organised by COMSNETS — an association of researchers from academia and industry, business leaders, intellectual property experts and venture capitalists — discussed the importance of value-added services (VAS) mobile telephony in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Speakers pointed out that although the mobile subscriber base had increased significantly in recent years, the Average Revenue per User (ARPU) from voice telephony had been falling.

Increasing services

They said that increased deployment of VAS could be used by mobile phone companies to arrest the decline in ARPU. The deployment of 3G spectrum would provide opportunities for not only the mobile phone companies but also for software developers and entrepreneurs.
