TUMKUR: The State Government will celebrate the birth centenary of Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga Math here for three days from February 2. The swamiji turned 101 on April 1, 2008. The H.D. Kumaraswamy Government, which had proposed to celebrate the centenary, could not hold it in April then due to the Assembly elections on May 10, 2008. The BJP, which came to power, wanted to hold the celebrations after it gained political stability. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who has finalised the dates of the celebrations, has invited President Pratibha Patil to inaugurate the celebrations on February 2. A high-level officials’ meeting was held here on Sunday to chalk out programmes during the President’s visit. At the meeting, Deputy Commissioner C. Somasekhara said that the drinking water problem in Tumkur city would have to be tackled on priority. Special meetingThe Tumkur City Municipal Council held a special meeting during the day and sought Rs. 101 crore from the Government to spruce up Tumkur city for the occasion. Tulasi Madhineni, Municipal Commissioner, said roadworks had to be completed in 20 days.
