Miserable: The carcass of a spotted deer being removed from the residential area of the Anna University on Monday.

CHENNAI: Two spotted deer were found dead inside the residential quarters in the Anna University campus on Monday. Residents of the Anna University campus informed the Wildlife authorities and the carcasses were later removed and buried inside the Guindy National Park.

Wildlife authorities said on an average one spotted deer died in IIT campus, Anna University Campus, behind YMCA Nandanam, or in the areas along the Adyar River in Kotturpuram area everyday.

Most of the deaths were due to dog bite and occasionally the ungulates were run over by vehicles while trying to cross the road.

A senior Wildlife officer said sometime ago an animal welfare organisation took up the work of sterilising the community dogs inside the IIT campus.

Initially, they were able to catch a few dogs. But, after sometime the dogs started hiding under the bushes on hearing the noise of the vehicle belonging to the animal welfare organisation making it difficult for them.
