Slovakia stuns USA

PERTH: Defending champion, the United States and host Australia, lost their opening Hopman Cup ties in Perth on Monday after lacklustre displays against Slovakia and Germany respectively.

The Slovakian duo of Dominika Cibulkova and Dominik Hrbaty completed a 3-0 rout of the top-seeded American team of Meghann Shaughnessy and James Blake.

Germany triumphed in a deciding mixed doubles tiebreaker to defeat Australia 2-1 in the other Group A encounter.

Group A: Germany bt Australia 2-1 (Sabine Lisicki bt Casey Dellacqua 4-6, 6-2, 7-5; Lleyton Hewitt bt Nicolas Kiefer 6-7, 6-3, 6-2; Sabine Lisicki/Nicolas Kiefer bt Casey Dellacqua/Lleyton Hewitt 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
