State help sought for emergency medical care courses

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Federation of Andhra Pradesh Medical Graduates in USA (APMGUSA) submitted a proposal to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy seeking Government support to start Emergency Medical Care Education, a State-wide educational project in medical colleges and affiliated hospitals.

Federation Chairman Mohan Mallam and Chairman, Emergency Care, Vemuri Murthy, told mediapersons here on Monday that heart attacks and strokes were on the rise in India due to stress and other lifestyle disorders. But not many doctors were trained in basic cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and advanced cardiac life support courses as it was not mandatory here like in the US.

Dr. Mohan said the federation with 8,600 practising doctors hailing from State was formed with the objective of improving rural health care in the State in association with Government and NGOs. Its members had set up safe drinking water plants in several districts, organised free health camps. For sponsoring a project through federation, one could visit www.apmgusa.org

Dr. S. Surendar Rao, President, US-based Association of Physicians from India, said API as part of improving rural health care was already running 17 free clinics in different States, including Andhra Pradesh. Eight diseases including heart attacks and diabetes were identified by API for special attention to their prevention and treatment in rural AP as a pilot project.
