Notional increments for apprentice teachers

Special Correspondent

The two increments will place an additional annual burden of Rs. 148 crore on the State exchequer

Increments will be merged with the teachers’ promotion scales

Financial benefit will be given only from the April 2010 salary

HYDERABAD: The State Cabinet resolved a long-pending issue of the teachers by deciding to give two notional increments to those recruited by District Selection Committees (DSC) since 1994 against their two-year apprenticeship period.

This decision will be implemented from April 1, 2009 and benefit 1,71,40 in-service teachers as also another 50,000 teachers being recruited through DSC-2008. It will place an additional annual burden of Rs. 148 crore on the exchequer.

Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Information Minister A. Ramanarayan Reddy said the increments would be merged with the teachers’ promotion scales but the financial benefit would be given only from the April 2010 salary.

Arrears

Arrears from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010 would be credited into their GPF accounts.

Later at a seminar on the ‘Role of teachers in strengthening government schools’ conducted by the Progressive Recognised Teachers’ Union (PRTU), Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday handed over the Government Order on notional increments to teachers to the leaders of the union.

Addressing the gathering, he said the government had never said ‘no’ to any genuine demand of its employees or teachers.

The government, Dr. Reddy asserted, was the first in the country to announce payment of 22 per cent interim relief within a month of the constitution of the Pay Revision Commission.

He stated that the problem of notional increment being raised by teachers since 1994 has now been resolved.

Pension scheme

The Cabinet cleared a scheme to give a monthly pension of Rs 200 each to AIDS patients with white cards who received anti-retroviral therapy for at least six months at the designated centres.

This would benefit 50,000 patients straightaway.

Indiramma housing

The meeting ratified an earlier government decision to construct 25.16 lakh dwelling units under Indiramma III at a cost of Rs 8,025 crores, taking the number of houses taken up under various housing schemes so far to a high 80 lakhs, with 65 lakhs out of them being under Indiramma alone.

It approved an action plan to complete another 8 lakhs houses by March-end.

A proposal to enable members of Dammali community, which was found in Srikakulam district, to get caste certificate from competent revenue officer anywhere in the State, was cleared.

As recommended by the State Backward Classes Commission, the name Pitchiguntla was revived in the State Backward Classes’ list in reference to Vamsaraj community.
