Orthopaedic surgeon from State wins Silver Jubilee Orator Award
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) has awarded the Silver Jubilee Orator Award to J. Naresh Babu, an orthopaedic surgeon, for his research on the development of a new surgical technique for treating skeletal floursis.
Dr. Naresh, the youngest recipient of the award, was earlier recipient of the prestigious AA Mehta Gold Medal by the IOA for his combined work in association with Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, on rejuvenating degenerating discs.
Addressing the media on Monday, Dr. Naresh Babu said that the technique, known as laminoplasty, was tried on over 23 patients with effective results. But this is the first time that this procedure has been used to treat those afflicted with flourosis,” he said.
Earlier treatment of the disorder included removal of bone on the patient’s neck portion to release the pressure on the nerves. But in laminoplasty, bones are opened like a window to release the pressure on the nerves. This prevented the thickening of ligaments again, he added. Emphasising the need for local research, Dr. Naresh pointed out that skeletal flourosis was an endemic problem. “This is our problem and most of the textbooks are authored by Americans or Britons,” he added.
