Cattle insurance launched
HYDERABAD: The Centre has decided to launch a cattle insurance programme aimed at extending support to farmers to insure their high quality milch cattle.
The programme will be implemented in 100 districts across the country on a pilot basis and eight districts from the State had been selected for implementation of the scheme. The Government has sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for the scheme to be implemented in Adilabad, Warangal, Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa and Anantapur districts.
As part of the scheme, cattle owners can insure their animals for one or three year period with the Government subsidising half the premium. While claims for death of animals due to diseases or accidents would be reimbursed, the scheme envisages payment of Rs. 50,000 if one animal is insured and Rs. 1 lakh in case of two in the event of the accidental death of the owner.
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy formally released posters and pamphlets of the scheme here on Monday, Briefing reporters later, Animal Husbandry Minister M. Buddha Prasad said the department had prepared an action plan for upgrading the low yielding milch cattle and improve the present level of high yielding milch cattle from 23 per cent to 75 per cent by 2015.
The action plan, with an estimated Rs. 323.27 crore, would be implemented over a period of five years.
