Staff Reporter

Nagercoil: The Government has allotted Rs.1.50 crore for the development of tourist spots in different parts of the district, including Kanyakumari, Thirparappu and Padmanabhapuram, said the Collector, Rajendra Kumar.

Inaugurating the National Tourism and Cultural Festival – 2009 here on Sunday, he said that Rs.85 lakh had been allotted for the development of Thirparappu falls and Rs.75 lakh had been allotted for the development of Kanyakumari and Padmanabhapuram. Necessary steps had already been taken to develop other tourist spots in order to attract both domestic and foreign tourists. Similarly, the infrastructure to all the tourist spots, including motorable roads, would be provided in near future.

The main aim was to create an awareness among the people of the tradition and the culture of the people of India, said the Collector.

Around 14.49 lakh tourists (both domestic and foreign tourists) visited Kanyakumari district during the year 2006, 19.90 lakh tourists in 2007 and 21.99 lakh tourists in 2008.

The multi-media exhibition organised by the Department of Public Relation evoked a very good response and both foreigners and north Indians visited the auditorium at Kanyakumari.
