Jayalalithaa demands police officers’ dismissal

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday demanded dismissal of the erstwhile Deputy-Inspector General of Police, S. S. Krishnamoorthy, and Madurai Rural Superintendent of Police M. Manoharan, for the “brutal attack” on party workers, including Melur MLA R. Samy.

After visiting the MLA and other workers at the central prison here, she told reporters that more than 200 police personnel “brutally attacked” the MLA and foisted cases on AIADMK leaders who had approached the police for filing complaints. The DIG and the SP were transferred after the party lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, she said, adding mere transfer was “not acceptable.” “I will not rest till they are dismissed from service.” The police had to function within the established norms.

Earlier in the day, the AIADMK leaders and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko presented a memorandum to the election observer, seeking a thorough check of all electronic voting machines in the presence of representatives of all political parties before the January 9 by-election at Thirumangalam.
