“10 police booths to be set up at select places in Pudukottai”

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: The police administration will implement a package of new schemes to bring down crimes and road accidents in the district this year. It will also enhance the skills of police personnel through special training programme.

As a first step, as many as 10 “May I Help” booths will be set up at select places in the town this year to assist the members of the public in need of any emergency help, the Superintendent of Police, P. Moorthy, said.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Moorthy said that the places had been identified in co-ordination with the municipality and the booths would be set up in course of time. He also said that with a view to bringing down crimes at thoroughfares in the town, surveillance cameras would be set up at places such as bus stand and commercial hubs. This would create a scare and serve as a forewarning among persons inclined to commit crimes such as pocket-picking, chain-snatching and allied offences.

The official said that three Highway patrolling units would be started at Keeranur, Aranthangi and Pudukottai. All efforts would be taken to regulate traffic at the junctions in the town. It has also been planned to start ‘Road safety’ clubs in schools to sensitise the students to traffic rules.

On special training to the police personnel, Mr. Moorthy said that training programmes on computer operation and first-aid techniques would be imparted to the personnel. The family members of police personnel at all the police quarters would be encouraged to form self-help groups to take to vocations. Comparing the performance of the police department, he said the property crimes had registered a serious fall to 234 during 2008 against 329 cases in 2007; the property recovery rate was 98 per cent against 94 per cent the previous year; the number of persons arrested under Goondas Act was 18 as against just 7 during 2007. The road accidents registered during 2008 was 1,140 against 1,298 in 2007.

There was an increase in drunken driving offences. From 497 in 2007, the number of cases had shot up to 2,295 during 2008, he added.
