Kozhikode district emerges winners

Thrissur comes second, Kannur and Palakkad share third place in State School Kalotsavam

THIRUVNANTHAPURAM: Kozhikode district, hosts of the next State School Kalotsavam, took home the coveted 117 sovereign gold trophy scoring the maximum points at the 49th edition of the event which concluded on Monday. Education Minister M.A. Baby handed over the trophy to the winners at the closing ceremony held at Putharikandom Maidan here.

Kozhikode district bagged the overall trophy by emerging winners in both the High School (HS) and Higher Secondary School (HSS) categories scoring 369 and 422 points respectively. Thrissur district won the runners up trophy scoring 355 points in the HS category and 398 points in the HSS category. The third position was shared by Kannur and Palakkad districts. While the former scored 348 points in the HS category and 386 points in the HSS category, Palakkad scored 336 and 398 points respectively.

Yesudas’ call

The closing ceremony was inaugurated by singer K.J. Yesudas. Speaking at the function, Mr. Yesudas said that the trend of challenging the decisions of judges at the youth festival should be discouraged.

“These are not things that should be dragged to court or police station. Parents should not promote such a trend and set a bad example to their children. During our times, we never brought our parents along. They were only happy to send their children along with their teachers,” he added.

Mr. Yesudas remembered his own experience at the 1958 school youth festival in which he bagged first prize for singing competition. He said he accompanied fellow singer Jayachandran in another event in which the latter played the mridangam.

Youth Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar presided over the function. Education Minister M.A. Baby gave away the prizes to the winners. Mr Baby said that ahead of the golden jubilee youth festival to be held in Kozhikode from January 4 to 10 next year, the 50-year history of the State school youth festivals would be chronicled.

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, Pannian Ravindran, MP; V. Sivankutty, V. Surendran Pillai, MLAs; A. Pradeep Kumar and P.M.A. Salam, MLAs from Kozhikode district; Kozhikode district panchayat president K.P. Kunhamadkutty; Vocational Higher Secondary Director Mohan Abraham and Higher Secondary Director C.P. Chitra were also present at the closing ceremony. City Mayor C. Jayan Babu later handed over the festival flag to Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran.

Arabic, Sanskrit fetes

Trophies were presented to the winners of the Arabic and Sanskrit Kalotsavam. Malappuram district emerged winners in the Arabic Kalotsavam scoring 90 points, followed by Kozhikode with 88 points. The third position was shared by Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts which scored 85 points each.

In the Sanskrit Kalotsavam, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts bagged the top honours scoring 89 points. Malappuram and Kozhikode bagged the second position scoring 87 points and Kollam, Palakkad and Kasaragod emerged third with 85 points each.

Among schools, St. Teresa`s Anglo-Indian HSS, Kannur, emerged first in the HS category and MKNM HSS Kumaramangalam, Idukki, in the HSS category. PSV PM HSS, Pathanamitta, bagged top honours in the Arabic Kalotsavam and AS HSS, Parippally, Kollam, bagged maximum points in the Sanskrit Kalotsavam.

Presenting the report of the 49th Kalotsavam, programme committee chairman V. Sivankutty said that a total of 96 appeals were considered by the appeal committee at the festival out of which 36 were granted. As many as 618 artists judged the various events of the youth, including artists from outside Kerala.

Earlier, a cultural show by prize winners of the youth festival was showcased. One-minute silence was observed in memory of Yedu Krishna who drowned in the Nila river during the HSS Kalotsavam at Kuttipuram, Malappuram, last year.
