Madurai triumphs

At Tiruchi, Madurai recorded a 4-1 win over Dindigul in a shoot-out to clinch the A.G. Subbaraman Trophy at the 18th State youth football championship on Monday.

Madurai looked the dominant side and could have sewed up the match in regulation time. But ill-luck and some brilliant saves by the Dindigul custodian Maniraj left the contest to be decided on shoot-out.

Madurai’s Robin Raj came agonisingly close to scoring midway through the first-half, but his lovely free kick hit the post. Madurai had two chances of scoring in the second half — one at the beginning and the other at the fag end — but the rival goalkeeper warded off the threats on both the occasions.

The Madurai players held their nerve in the shoot-out and converted all four of their attempts to emerge victorious. It was a case of so near yet so far for the Dindigul team, which finished runner-up in the previous edition as well.
