KOZHIKODE: A number of programmes were organised here on Sunday under the aegis of the Kozhikode District unit of the Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) as part of the bi-centenary birth celebrations of Louise Braille, the author of Braille. The event was conducted in association with Calicut Higher Secondary School for Handicapped. Scores of visually impaired persons participated in the white cane rally held from the Railway Station to the Training College auditorium. It turned out to be an occasion to highlight the commendable contribution made by Louise Braille in opening the doors of knowledge to the visually impaired, and how Braille translated to all languages continued to be the simple and effective means of communication for them. The KFB is also observing a fortnight-long campaign from January 4 to highlight before the government and the general public various issues affecting the visually impaired. Awareness classes and exhibitions would be held in different centres as part of the endeavour, KFB District President T. Sunil said. Public meetingLocal Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty who inaugurated the public meeting on the occasion said the government would ensure that the three per cent job reservation for the visually impaired was implemented. He assured that hike in pension for the visually impaired would be considered in the next budget and discussions would be held on the various issues affecting them. C.K. Aboobacker, KFB State president delivered the keynote address at the meeting.
