Over 1300 take part in half marathon in Tiruchi

Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project’s silver jubilee celebrations

TIRUCHI: There was an overwhelming response to the ‘grand open half marathon’ organised on Sunday by the Sports Association of the Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP), Tiruchi, as part of the project’s silver jubilee celebrations.

As against the expected participation of 1,000 persons, over 1,300 participants turned up much to the delight of the organisers. The participants included a majority of students from schools and colleges from across the district and members of sports clubs and also from Customs, OFT, Sports Hostel etc apart from HAPP.

The Sports Association took the support of Tiruchi District Athletic Association to organise the event. The General Manger of HAPP, R. R. Yadava flagged-off the marathon, in the presence of the former international high-jumper, N. Annavi.

The marathon was held under various categories for men and women participants from below 16 years to above 40 years. The General Manager of the Ordnance Factory, Tiruchi (OFT), Rajesh Kumar was the chief guest and he gave away the prizes to the winners. Prize money to the tune of over Rs.40,000 was awarded to the winners.

The following is the list of cash prize winners:

Men (21 km):

1.Gopi (Customs), 2. Sivakumar (Rail Sports Club), 3.Sivanatham (St. Joseph’s College) and 4. Thangavel.

Women (12 km):

1.Shanthi (Rail SC), 2. M. Vidhya (Rail SC), 3. T. Muthulakshmi, 4. Chandrakala (HAPP).

Boys below 20 years (8 km):

1.B. Veerannan (St. Joseph’s College), 2.Sakthivel (Infant Jesus Polytechnic), 3.M. Venkatesan and 4. Prabu (both Bishop Heber College).

Girls below 20 years (6 km):

1.Saranya (Walkers Sports Club), 2. Merlin Pricilla (Government Girls Hr. Sec. School, Kattur), 3. Abitha Jenifer (OFT HSS).

Boys below 16 years (6 km):

1.Visvendran and 2. Prabakaran (both Sports Hostel), 3. Suresh (Rail SC).

Girls below 16 years (4 km):

1.Shanmathi (HAPP), 2. Brindha (Government Girls HSS, Mathur), 3. Akilandeswari (Boiler Plant Girls HSS).

Master Men – above 40years (6 km):

1.Sasi (HAPP), 2. Dharmalingam (OFT) and Nopit (HAPP).

Maste Women – above 40 years (4 km):

1.Renuka (HAPP), 2. Rani (HAPP) and 3. Prema (OFT).
