South-eastern coastal security beefed up

S. Vijay Kumar

CHENNAI: Security agencies have intensified vigil along the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu in view of the ongoing war between armed forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka.

According to Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) T. Rajendran, a close watch is being maintained on refugee camps after the Sri Lankan Army captured Kilinochchi.

“A general alert has been issued to the coastal districts. Security has been tightened ahead of the visit of the President and the Prime Minister to Chennai,” he said here on Sunday.

Jagan M. Seshadri, Director General of Police (Civil Defence), who is also heading the Coastal Security Group, said the police were working in close co-ordination with the Navy and the Coast Guard.

“Surveillance at landing points and vulnerable areas in territorial waters has been enhanced,” he said.
