MANGALORE: The New Mangalore Port Trust is poised for a big leap in handling cargo in the backdrop of increased movement of cargo from the hinterland. An NMPT press release said that the port was in the threshold of setting up infrastructure to cope up with the increased flow of traffic. Concreting of the roads inside the port was under progress, it said adding two godowns had been recently commissioned for attracting general cargo. For faster turn round time of rakes, the railway siding was extended to the wharf area and one more railway line was added at the marshalling yard to meet the increased flow of railway traffic, it said. IncreaseThe release said cargo traffic was continuing to increase. During the end of the third quarter of 2008-09, the port handled 27.71 million tonnes of cargo as against 26.91million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. Container traffic grew by 47.39 per cent. The port handled 22,752 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units — one TEU is equal to 34 cubic metres) up to December 2008 compared with 15,437 TEUs in the corresponding period last year. During the period 46.16 lakh tonnes of cargo was moved by rail as against 43.14 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
