MADURAI: Even as political parties stepped up their campaign in Thirumangalam, three companies of paramilitary forces (200 personnel) from different cities arrived here on Sunday. With the by-election to Thirumangalam Assembly constituency scheduled for January 9, the police have made elaborate security arrangements. After a review of the poll preparations last week, the Election Commission of India had announced deployment of Central forces to ensure that polling is free and fair. The paramilitary forces are in addition to the more than 1,200 personnel of the State police drawn from the neighbouring districts. In the next two-three days, another five companies of Central forces will arrive here, Inspector-General of Police (southern zone) Sanjeev Kumar told The Hindu. He said that during the visit of Director-General of Police K.P. Jain on Saturday, top officials, including Deputy Election Commissioner J.P. Prakash, reviewed the security provided to various leaders such as former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and DMDK president Vijayakant during their campaign. As for the AIADMK’s representation for additional security to its leader, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar said two police vehicles moved ahead of Ms. Jayalalithaa’s convoy and two brought up the rear. A similar arrangement was in place for the other Opposition leaders.
