BANGALORE: The Government will take steps to modernise the police, Home Minister V.S. Acharya said while inaugurating the eight-day “52nd All India Police Duty Meet-2008” at the KSRP Grounds in Koramangala here on Saturday.

To this end, police personnel will be offered refresher courses and motivation programmes and the police department will have access to modern technology and weapons.

Director-General and Inspector-General of Police R. Sri Kumar said citizens should assist the police to help curb anti-social activities and asked police personnel to tackle crises confidently.

The Karnataka State Police is organising the meet with the association of All India Police Sports Control Board, Ministry of Home Affairs and Government of India.

Some 937 police officers from various States and Union Territories are participating in the meet which has competitions six categories such as expertise in technology, sniffer dog, photography, anti-sabotage checking and computer knowledge.

Apart from sports, workshops and symposiums, the meet will also promote exchange of views and ideas between officials. Preferences will be given to discuss about the use of modern technologies and scientific methodology. This is the second time the State is hosting the meet. The first was held in the city in 2002 and the State topped the meet.
