‘Do not curtail powers of panchayats’

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Women gram panchayat members from various districts, including Mysore, Mandya, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Chikmagalur, have opposed the move by the Government to curtail the powers of panchayats.

Indira, president of the Gangasandra village panchayat in Gauribidanur taluk, told presspersons here on Saturday that recent statement of Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Sobha Karandlaje that some powers of village panchayats would be transferred to Members of Legislative Assembly for better functioning, would dilute the purpose of constitution of village panchayats.

She said interference by the elected representatives such as zilla pancnayat members, MLAs had resulted in poor performance in some village panchayats. The proposal to form monitoring committees for supervising the village panchayats would lead to diluting the powers of village panchayats and also create confusion.

Another village panchayat president from Maddur taluk, Bharati, alleged that the village panchayat members were not aware of the decisions taken by the government with respect to their functioning, as most of such government orders were not reaching them.
