MAKING A POINT: Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, speaking at a meeting held to review progress of Education Department in Mangalore on Saturday. MANGALORE: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said on Saturday that a special programme, “Parihara bodhane” will be launched in government schools from next month. Under the programme, students from class one to seven will receive special coaching for one hour a day to learn basics of English language. He was speaking at a meeting held to review the progress of the Education Department in Dakshina Kannada. “It is our endeavour to raise the standard and quality of education in government schools on par with private schools. The Government will initiate steps to achieve this end from now on,” Mr. Kageri said. In response to a report read out in the meeting that about 150 students were yet to join any school in the district, the Minister said that the Heads of institutions should think of ways and means of bringing those children back to schools. He said that the programme, “Samudayadatta Shale”, meant to motivate drop-outs to return to schools, would be held on January 5 and 12. Stating that the salaries of government school teachers were being promptly disbursed, he said the Government had decided to increase the monthly remuneration of mid-day meal workers by Rs. 150. The Cabinet had approved another proposal on Friday of distributing 6,70,000 bicycles among students across the State. Of them, 27,000 bicycles would be for Dakshina Kannada, the Minister said.
