Udhagamandalam: The recovery of old ammunition from a house here created a flutter on Friday. It was stated that a retired defence officer Lt.Col. N.G.O’Connor Noel Gregory who was staying in a rented bungalow on the Westbury road had died on December 27. When his daughter Maureen Edge arrived to vacate the house she found two wooden boxes and a leather bag containing large quantity of ammunition. She immediately informed the defence authorities and the local police. InvestigationA police team headed by the Inspector General of Police Pramod Kumar visited the house and started an investigation. Later speaking to presspersons, Mr. Kumar said that the retired officer who was staying with his son had died at the age of 82. Among the 7267 ammunitions recovered were 5214 A.K.47 rounds made between 1965 and 1969 and 378 7.62 Rimless belt type SLR 5 Chain rolls. There were also two missiles including a live one, two fired cases of rocket launchers (gifted) and one live rocket launcher. They were wrapped in newspapers. Stating that Lt.Col. Gregory had retired from the Indian Army in 1976, Mr. Kumar said that he had fought in the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. He was also a Vir Chakra recipient. Illegal possessionInvestigations conducted so far do not reveal any foul play on the part of the deceased. However, he had the items in his possession illegally. A case has been registered.
