BJP Mahila Morcha seeks ‘white paper’ on crimes against women

HYDERABAD: Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded the State government to publish a white paper on crimes against women and the steps taken to control them.

Party’s national secretary Kiran Ghai and national executive member Nirmala Sitharaman at a press conference here on Saturday expressed concern over increasing crimes against women in A.P. since the Congress assumed power, while referring to the recent acid attack on two girl students in Warangal.

Quoting figures of the National Crime Records for 2007, they said 13.3 per cent of crimes against women in the country were from Andhra Pradesh. Also, 30.3 per cent of sexual harassment cases, the highest, were from the State. Similarly, AP reported 83.5 per cent of the cases under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. In domestic violence, 14.9 per cent of cases were from the State, second only to Tripura, while the national average was 6.7 per cent.

Among 35 mega cities, Delhi accounted for 17.5 per cent of crimes against women, followed by Hyderabad (7.8 per cent). Earlier Bihar was notorious for such incidents, but the law and order situation there had improved, while it deteriorated in Andhra Pradesh and women were feeling insecure.

Court directive

The leaders demanded implementation of the Supreme Court directive on police reforms by setting up a State Security Commission and segregating the law and order and investigation wings.
