Bring stability in villages, says RIAD chairman

Staff Reporter

Purushottam Rao stresses local governance

‘Protect villages from onslaught of globalisation’

‘Government schools failing to attract students’

SANGAREDDY: Rural Integrated Area Development (RIAD) chairman T. Purushottam Rao on Saturday said that efforts should be made to stabilise villages with local governance as the aim.

Addressing a review meeting of district officials and later speaking to the media, Mr. Rao said that for the first time in the country, the RIAD was taken up in the State on an experimental basis.

Mr. Rao is also in-charge for the Gandhi Patham programme taken up by the ruling Congress party.

“The world is looking at India and Andhra Pradesh has become the experimental centre for many activities. Both RIAD and Gandhi Patham are two faces of the same coin — one administration side and the other party side — and were started with a motive of success,” he said.

Welfare schemes

Stating that as much as Rs. 1 lakh crore is being spent by the government to yield results for all welfare schemes in the State,

Mr. Rao said that it was ultimately the question of protecting villages from the onslaught of globalisation.

“We are living in a period of tremendous opportunities. How best we can use them and become an example to others depends on our success,” he said.

At the review meeting, district educational officer Gopal Reddy admitted that government schools were failing to attract the students and lack of proper care at schools was also one of the reason for that.

Collector Peeyush Kumar, Joint Collector Ram Shankar Naik, CEO Y. Upender Reddy, DRO B.S.V.V.S. Murthy and others participated in the review meeting.
