Meet on climate changes held

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) South Asia have organised a "Stakeholder Consultation Meeting" for Strategic Programme Fund - Climate Change and Energy (SPF-CCE/ICLEI SA) project on climate change. The project is funded by the British High Commission for CCE Programme under SPF of the Government of the United Kingdom. The project is under Phase I of the programme and the ICLEI-South Asia project team is working on the corporate and community inventory of emission owing to the services provided by the corporation to the city and energy use by community.

Municipal Commissioner B. Sridhar inaugurated the meeting on the reduction of the emissions through city-level local action plans by Integrating Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) measures into city activities. .

ICLEI South Asia project team members Kamlesh Pathak and Ravi Ranjan Guru made a presentation on the city energy status and the carbon emission inventory. The study is the result of extensive data collection and data analysis from ICLEI South Asia team. The organisation has used Harmonized Emission Analysis Tool (HEAT), an emission calculation software tool for the local Governments. The city contributed 73,60,429 tonnes of CO2 during 2008 and the emissions had gone up by 11 per cent during the period 2006-2008. The per capita emission from Visakhapatnam city is 4.91 tonnes a year.

The ICLEI South Asia has discussed the draft “City-level Climate Protection Policy” and Local-level Action Plan for the city. The policy and action plan will be adopted by GVMC through council resolution.

Bhanumathi Das from the Institute for Solid Waste Research and Ecological Balance, Deepa More and S.K.Khasim Beebi from GITAM University, P. Latha from ECO-Carbon Pvt. Ltd, Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change Executive Director Walter Mendoza, Radha from Architecture & Development and Programme Coordinator (CC&E) Ajitha attended. ICLEI South Asia Consultant, G. Srinivasa, GVMC Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy and Superintendent Engineer (Projects) T.Moses Kumar were present.
