These children have solutions on offer

MANGALORE: The weigh-bridge near Thumbay vented dam can be used for pumping water into the nearby reservoir without using electricity, according to Madura Bharadwaj and M. Deeksha of St. Gerosa School, here. Their science model at the State-level science exhibition competition, which opened at the Vidadayini High School in Suratkal on Friday, demonstrated the idea.

In their scheme of things, the several iron ore-laden trucks passing across the dam will do the pumping of water automatically. Ms. Madura will have the trucks pay for using the weigh-bridge and this will fetch the money required for the maintenance of the project.

Ms. Madhura told The Hindu that the water scarcity and frequent power cuts in the district prompted her to come up with this project.

Students of Ugara J.E.T. School in Atheni of Belgaum district, through their model, demonstrated how electricity can be generated from moving vehicles.

Padmini and Tejaswini of G.G.J.C. School, Balnoor, near Mysore, showed how electricity can be produced through rainwater harvesting on the terraces of various buildings.
