Air show in Tiruchi on February 3

TIRUCHI: Adventure buffs of Tiruchi and neighbouring districts could look forward to a rare spectacle on the skies early next month.

Suryakiran, the aerobatic team of the Indian Air Force, will stage an air show at the Tiruchi airport on February 3. The team, based at Bidar in Karnataka, will perform in the city for the first time.

A fleet of nine Surya Kiran aircraft will take part in the 45-minute show. The show will feature the team’s standard formation and manoeuvres such as loops and barrel roll. There may be minor changes, depending on the weather condition. The event will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. to avoid disruption of the commercial air traffic at the airport.

Officials of the district administration and Airport authorities have started the groundwork for the show. On Saturday, Collector T. Soundiah convened a meeting with officials of the Air Force Station, Thanjavur, the Tiruchi airport and various government agencies to discuss the arrangements to be made. A temporary enclosure will be established close to the airport for the people to view the event. The police, the Fire and Rescue Services, medical services and the Corporation, besides the Airports Authority of India, were involved in the preparations.

Group Captain S.S. Kothari, Station Commander, Air Force Station, Thanjavur, said that the air show in Tiruchi would be followed by another at the Thanjavur Air Force Station on February 5.
