DINDIGUL: Close on the heels of the Department of Tourism and district administration commencing preliminary work at Thadiyankudisai, a recently declared Spices Tourism Spot in the district, a team of students from Iowa University, USA, have descended on the village. Students doing geology, ecology and geography degree courses have come to this remote hill station to study ecological and geographical conditions using advanced scientific methods such as Global Positioning System. Divided into small groups, they will stay in houses of tribal people for the next five days. Earlier, in an interaction with Collector R. Vasuki, many students were eager to know about development schemes and rights of rural women. “Is there any collaboration or joint venture with neighbouring districts in executing welfare programmes jointly because you have collaboration with the U.S. and other countries for major joint ventures,” asked one student. They were keen to know about government measures towards welfare of tribal people and conservation of Kodaikanal hill and pollution control. What attracted them most was the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. Led by Linderman Mark, Professor, Department of Remote Sensing, and R. Rajagopal, Professor, Department of Geography, the team has come to India to study mountain eco system. Later, it will go to Kodaikanal, Thekkadi and Munnar.
