VISAKHAPATNAM: The weight-loss pill ‘Rimonabant’ is said to cause psychiatric side effects, including suicidal tendencies among users. Research conducted on the directions of the Drugs Controller General of India has confirmed this and hence the pill has been banned, according to Drugs Controller Ravi Udaya Bhaskar. About 12 companies in India are manufacturing the anti-obesity drug. He directed the distributors and chemists not to purchase or sell the following brand names containing (Rimonabant): Slimona, Rimoslim, Riobant, Zimulti, Monaslim and Acomplia. Doctors are asked not to prescribe these drugs and consumers have been advised not to use them.
