English film, Seven Pounds, will be the inaugural film

Admission through delegate passes priced at

Rs. 500 for entire duration of festival


BANGALORE: Screening of over 140 films representing 35 countries, world retrospectives, world classics, tributes, Chitra Bharati, a gallery of Indian cinema, children’s and documentary films, a 150-minute video presentation on the evolution of Kannada film music and a comprehensive photo exhibition on the growth of Kannada cinema will mark the third edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival 2009.

The festival is being organised by the Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy and Suchitra Film Society in association with the State Government and the Kannada film industry.

Chairman of the organising committee of the festival V.N. Subba Rao told presspersons here on Friday that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would inaugurate the festival on January 15 at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall. The leading artiste of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema Prakash Rai would be the chief guest. An English film, Seven Pounds, which is due for its commercial release on January 30 in the country, would be the inaugural film of the festival, he added.

The festival films would be screened at Vision Cinemas multiplex and K.H. Patil Auditorium on K.H. Road (Double Road), the Suchitra Auditorium on B.V. Karanth Road, Banashankari II Stage and Badami Hall at NR Square from January 16 to 22.

B.S. Ranga, nonagenarian film producer, director, studio owner and cinematographer and veteran artiste B. Saroja Devi would be honoured on the occasion. Monographs on Mr. Ranga and on the celebrated director the late N. Lakshminarayan would be released during the festival. Films of the late actor-producer M.P. Shankar, producer K.V. Jayaram and lyricist R. N. Jayagopal would be screened in the homage section. Workshops on cinematography and animation, and seminars would mark the event, he added.

Acclaimed film-maker and festival director Girish Kasaravalli said the festival was much of a cultural event. Varied narrative methods of the films screened at film festivals would help better understanding of the countries.

Executive director of the festival N. Vidyashankar said that admission to the festival would be through delegate passes priced at Rs. 500 for the entire duration of the festival for the public. It would be Rs. 300 for members of film societies and students from film schools and journalism and communication colleges and institutions.
