‘Check illegal transport of cattle to abattoirs’

Yeddyurappa holds review meeting with top district officials

‘Illegal transportation of cattle was leading

to communal confrontation’

nine districts

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has directed the police in the State to be vigilant against illegal transport of cattle to slaughterhouses.

Holding a review meeting with deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of various districts in the State through videoconference on Friday, Mr. Yeddyurappa said the police officials all over the State, particularly in communally sensitive districts, should ensure that foolproof measures were in place to check the illegal transportation of cattle to slaughterhouses.

Pointing out that the illegal transportation of cattle was leading to communal confrontation, Mr. Yeddyurappa said the police inaction in the matter was forcing the general public to intervene in the matter “out of concern”. “If only the police could prevent the illegal transportation, such confrontations could be avoided,” he said.

Communal tension

Mr. Yeddyurappa’s directions to the police to act against illegal transportation of cattle came after the Bijapur police informed him that ten persons had been arrested in connection with the distribution of inflammatory pamphlets, which had led to communal tension in the region recently.

Earlier, Mr. Yeddyurappa enquired with the Dakshina Kannada district police on the communal situation in the district and was informed by the police that Christmas and New Year passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.

Reacting to complaints of the delay in issue of Bhagyalakshmi bonds by the insurance company, Mr. Yeddyurappa asked the district administration to despatch a letter confirming the approval of their applications to the beneficiaries.

“The proforma for the letter will be sent to all the district headquarters soon. The letters confirming the approval of the applications should instil confidence in the beneficiaries. They should not fall prey to agents and touts,” the Chief Minister said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa also cautioned the district officials against succumbing to pressure while selecting beneficiaries for the Sandhya Suraksha scheme, which entitles people above the age of 65 to a monthly honorarium of Rs. 400.

“If you keep succumbing to pressure, the number of beneficiaries will become unwieldy and even ineligible people will make it. But, ensure that eligible people are included in the list,” he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa reviewed the progress of the various government schemes like distribution of below poverty line (BPL) cards, identification of beneficiaries for Ashraya housing scheme, work on filling up of potholes, besides work under the MLA’s Area Development Fund.

During the videoconference, Mr. Yeddyurappa interacted with district administration officials of Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Belgaum, Bagalkot, Davangere, Shimoga, Bijapur, Mysore and Mandya. The remaining districts will be covered during the next videoconference.
