KOCHI: Families displaced for the rail and road connectivity for the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal have reasons to cheer as the State government has declared a Rs. 7-crore special package. The newly declared package is aimed at providing rent at the rate of Rs. 5,000 for 10 months, Rs. 10,000 for shifting their valuables and to pay compensation in lieu of land as the court had asked the government to give more land to some evictees. The government had taken the stand that it was difficult to find additional land and expressed willingness to pay the value of land in such cases. Earlier, these benefits were available only to those evictees from the Kadamakkudy village covered under a special package the government had declared for them.
